Metacognitive therapy (MCT) is a new evidence-based psychological treatment method for mental health disorders such as stress and depression. The metacognitive therapist focuses on eliminating time-consuming worries and rumination by helping you develop new ways to relate to negative thoughts.
This method was developed by Dr. Adrian Wells and is based on research showing that it is not the presence of negative thoughts that makes us unwell, anxious, or depressed, but rather the amount of time we spend processing and worrying about those negative thoughts.
In professional terminology, this phenomenon is referred to as the Cognitive Attentional Syndrome (CAS).
CAS consists of time-consuming speculation and rumination, a fixation of attention on perceived threats, and ineffective coping behaviors that backfire and worsen problems.
This harmful change in thought and attention patterns stems from our metacognitive beliefs – that is, the thoughts we have about our thoughts. In other words, our metacognitive beliefs dictate the strategies we use and guide how we relate to and process our thoughts.
